For Some, Going Offshore Is All About Protecting Loved Ones

How This “Ordinary Guy” Is Building His Wealth, One Flag At A Time…

In Santo Domingo last month—for the first time in Offshore Wealth Summit history—one of our alumnus took the stage.

Every year, it’s a packed schedule, but we made time this year for All Access Pass Member Dusty Tubbs to share his story as the “ordinary guy” in the room…

“Six years ago, my wife Carolyn and I were sitting exactly where you’re sitting now,” Dusty told our audience. “You’re here today because you want to learn from Lief and his team of offshore experts who have been planting flags for decades. But I’m here to show you that the ordinary person can have success, too—and turn things around within a few years…

“First let me tell you that I’m proud to be an American. I love America. I served in the U.S. Navy and fought for America. But sometimes I’m worried about where America is headed…

“What keeps me awake at night? The inevitable collapse of the U.S. dollar. That’s a matter of when… not if. And, it’s going to affect the whole world… not just American citizens.

“We know Social Security is in trouble. The U.S. government is running out of money. For 23 years, I’d been receiving my military pension… when I started to worry about the future of that fund. So, I decided to enter a second phase of retirement—to retire from my Navy retirement and diversify investments into opportunities offshore.

“While I may not be considered wealthy, I feel I have the right to protect my assets just as much as the wealthy guy does. Ultimately, my goal is to provide for my wife, so that, whatever may happen to me in the future, Carolyn can continue living comfortably—without feeling pinched.

“Nobody’s going to do this for me. Nobody’s going to do it for you. We need to take action and start planting our own flags. But what I’ve learned in the years of attending Lief and Kathleen’s events is that we’re not alone. Here, at Live and Invest Overseas, we have a supportive community—our tribe.

“Two big pieces of advice I’d like to give you as you consider your own diversification plans…

“First, if you’re doing this with a spouse or partner (and most of us are), be sure to discuss your ideas with them and consider them in your plan. Otherwise, you may wind up on a solo journey…

“Second, where you plant your flags is entirely personal. But be sure to ask yourself this important question: ‘If this is my exit strategy, how am I going to get there?’

“Carolyn and I have residency in both Panama and the Dominican Republic. In a crisis, both are easy and affordable to get to on a one-way flight from the United States, and you can quickly get from one to the other. A friend has residency in Ecuador and Chile, neither of which is an easy ticket.

“Finally, don’t think of offshore diversification as an opportunity to get rich quick. Obtaining wealth is a process, not a sudden windfall. Instead of seeking instant gratification, look for a constant positive return on your investment.

“We’re not a bunch of doomsday preppers here. You and I realize that change is coming. Let’s prepare for it.”

Well said, Dusty.

When the next break time came, a line of attendees queued up to talk to Dusty. And they were still approaching him with questions right until we wrapped up the event.

The thing that struck me most about Dusty’s talk was his own goal—to provide a safe and comfortable future for his wife. Most attendees I meet at our Offshore Wealth Summits are in the same boat. They’re not on a mission to avoid taxes (as the uninformed would accuse them of)… but to find legal ways to safeguard what they have so it can be enjoyed by their loved ones.

In his talk, Dusty pointed out that it’s never too late to start your planning. Likewise it’s never too early. It was a welcome surprise to see that a few attendees brought their children with them—some as young as their late teens and early 20s. I hope to have more families join us at future events.
