How To Fund Your New Life Overseas Without Working 9-5

From Digital Nomad To Food Truck Chef—How To Fund Your New Life Overseas

In your new life overseas, you could support yourself by going to work for someone else… but who wants a J-O-B?

Better to make your own money and control your own schedule.

Breaking from the 9-5 world opens you up to a world of new possibilities…

You could be a consultant, coaching, mentoring, or tutoring others interested in acquiring skills you hold thanks to years or decades of professional experience in the developed world…

You could import or export… market or sell online… manage rental properties… or start a food-processing business (I know one expat-entrepreneur who is making a business of habanero onion sauce in Cayo, Belize, using his own recipe and ingredients he grows on his farm)…

You could teach English, either online or in person… lead tours… or open a dance studio…

You could be a freelance travel writer… a copywriter… a blogger… or a vlogger…

For the past 15 years, Louisa Rogers and her husband have been dividing their time between Eureka, California and Guanajuato, Mexico—the UNESCO World Heritage site in the country’s Colonial Highlands.

Louisa writes freelance articles on travel, expat life, retirement, health, spiritual living, family, and more… leads seminars in English and Spanish… and offers life coaching over Skype…

“The older we get, the more we each know our unique brand of expert skills,” says Louisa. “Couple that expertise with loyal, trusting relationships, and I believe you can work anywhere in the world.”

Maybe you’d welcome the opportunity to spend more time outside in nature…

Former Washington policeman Frank Steigmeier bought up 100 acres of riverfront in Boquete, Panama. Rio Encantado (“Enchanted River”) is his vision for an eco-resort and outdoor adventure haven—a celebration of his love for nature and art.

One side of the river is home to a maintained pool area complete with an open-air bar, cabins, picnic areas, and three rental cottages. On the other side are three natural swimming holes, well maintained jungle trails, and, in Frank’s words, “a senior citizen’s zipline.” His pièce de résistance is a treehouse, with beautiful carpentry, that rents for US$150 a night.

If food is a passion, could you put your cooking skills to work?…

French brothers Charlie and Arnaud recently relocated to Panama. Not long after settling in, they set to work on fulfilling their longstanding dream: having their own French-food restaurant.

The most convenient way for them to follow through on that dream? Opening a food truck. That’s how Ma Mamie came to be.

Located in front of Plaza Albrook in Panama City, the Ma Mamie menu runs the gamut from quiche lorraine and croque monsieur to gratin dauphinois and crêpes anointed with salted-caramel sauce…

These expats are all doing what they love… working on their own terms… and enjoying the adventure of living overseas.

No reason you can’t do the same.

And, running a business in a new country hands you two important bonuses…

First, you learn quickly how to get yourself set up…

Second, it’s an ideal way to become part of the local community and make new friends…
