English-Speaking And Quirky: This Is Belize
Most North Americans know Belize as a sunny, tropical destination. But white sand isn’t the only reason drawing people here to stay…
In Belize City last week for our 2018 Live and Invest in Belize Conference, I caught up with many attendees over cocktails the first night.
One of our guests came looking to buy land. But, after a day in the city, he upgraded his plan to include a condo, too…
Meanwhile, a couple from Alberta, Canada were in town seeking a warmer winter escape. They’re not focused on Caribbean shores—though they do welcome the opportunity to live closer to the coast (back home, the nearest beach is 15 hours away). These guys are farmers at heart—in Alberta, they keep horses and enjoy planting their garden. Here in Belize, they hope they can expand into micro-farming and growing more organic fruit and veg. When I left them, they were going on a post-event tour to Carmelita Gardens—which could be just the solution for them.
Last week’s event was our biggest Belize event to date… and, remarkably, we counted more Canadians in the house than ever before. My Canadian sidekick Allison connected with her countrymen and women last week and found the top reasons they were attracted here to be:
- It’s an English-speaking nation…
- Great weather (no snow-shoveling required)…
- Beautiful beaches and jungle to explore…
- Close proximity to home
The fact that Belize is English-speaking is a big draw, of course. That’s what gets a lot of North Americans over the line… and down here to check it out for themselves.
But Belize isn’t for everyone. It has its quirks. In our taxi from the airport, the driver told us that there are two stoplights in Belize City. But only one of them works… most of the time. It’s been in the country for about a year, but people are just starting to figure out how it works.
This is somewhere where you’ll definitely need your sense of humor pill… and an open mind. For those looking for something different… craving an adventure… it could be just perfect…
