Everything You Need To Launch Your Self-Sufficient Life

The Self-Sufficient Life—Your Way

From our early morning beer tasting… to strolling through the farmer’s market… to watching one of the farmer’s wives pluck a duck in record time… what an experience to be in San Ignacio last week…

At this first Self-Sufficiency Seminar, all our attendees (and staff) were eager to learn more about self-sufficient practices and how to live closer to nature… to grow our own tasty fruit and vegetables for the table (and for extra income)… to plan more sustainable homes… to raise poultry and livestock… to produce energy in our backyard… to use natural remedies… and lots more…

One of the highlights for me was to finally experience Carmelita Gardens—a planned community with self-sufficiency at the core of its living. Here, you can get your hands dirty with planting and harvesting, or you can simply take advantage of the fruits and vegetables grown on-site that will be made available for residents. Either way, you get to hang out in this special part of the world in good company.

Thomas Barker, farmer at Carmelita Gardens who also spoke at the event, told me about his plans for planting. On his list were some pumpkins and melons of French origin (thanks to the seeds that Kathleen and Lief brought down after their last trip to France). I look forward to returning next year to check in on progress…

2 Options To Get Your Overseas Living Dreams Off The Ground

Another Year Wasted? Not Yet…

Today, outside the boundaries of America—from my native France to my new home in Panama City—you may be surprised (or relieved) by the lack of jack-o’-lanterns, candy corn, and spooky dress.

In most of the rest of the world, today is simply Oct. 31.

Yes, dear reader, we’re at the last day of October. Which means something else for you…

Not a whole lot of 2016 left to load up the wagon and get your overseas living dreams off to a start.

But there’s still time. And certainly enough time to make early plans for a big adventure in 2017.

Coming up on the events calendar, you have a number of options…

Option 1: Go Now

Last on the calendar for 2016 is our first standalone Self-Sufficiency Seminar inContinue reading

The Secrets Of The Self-Sufficient Lifestyle Explored In Belize

Paradise For The Quirky Expat

Last week, as we opened up registration to our Self-Sufficiency Seminar in Belize, I shared with you some of the benefits of the self-sufficient lifestyle.

While we’re basing this event in Belize, it doesn’t mean that you have to be entirely sold on Belize to join us. This is just as much an opportunity to discover these life-changing (and potentially life-saving) practices—and how you can implement them back home or anywhere in the world you may be thinking about spending time—as it is about an adventure into “the breadbasket of Belize.”

That said, there’s a reason we chose Belize—and particularly its Cayo region—as our base for this one-of-a-kind event.

For a start, the Cayo region is rich in resources—both natural and manmade. It has more protected land than any other district… it’s the top eco-tourism destination in the country… and it boasts the largest underground cave system in the western hemisphere.

Its landscape is dominated by fields and pastures, trees and jungle, rivers and livestock. Here and there, you’ll see a small house of concrete block or timber, and, in the distance, the Maya Mountains. Farmers tend corn and sugarcane, watermelons and citrus. Here, in this land of escape, life revolves around the land and values independence above all else. Continue reading

5 Benefits Of The Self-Sufficient Life And Where To Start

A Little Self-Sufficiency Is Better Than None

Back in January, following our Live and Invest in Belize event, we ran an optional add-on Self-Sufficiency Seminar in Belize’s Cayo region. It was our first attempt at anything like this…

We truly believe in Belize and its ability to offer one of the best “back to the land” lifestyle experiences. But, the return to self-sufficient practices is a relatively new movement—and a topic we hadn’t really talked a whole lot about. So, when we promoted the Self-Sufficiency weekend late last year, we weren’t sure we’d get the interest.

But we did. We filled up all the available spots, and those adventurers that came with us into the heart of the Cayo—guided by the experts who are living and teaching this way of life—had the weekend of a lifetime…

The feedback was so positive, we’ve decided to run another event this November. This will be our first stand-alone Self-Sufficiency Seminar…and, again, we’ll be based in Cayo, Belize.

I understand this is a specialized event—one that won’t appeal to everyone. But, if you’re at all intrigued by the idea, here are a few things you should now about the self-sufficient life…

First, you don’t need a farming background. Whether you live in the city or country… whether you keep a garden or just some potted plants on your balcony… this is open to everyone. All you need is Continue reading
